It was only two years ago that a tall athletic player with the speed of a gazelle came to the Brampton Warriors basketball court. She could run. She was hungry to learn and learn she did. Day in and day out, she worked hard in the gym. It was a difficult adjustment to the intensity that her coaches demanded, but through it all, she fought hard and played through all the challenges.
Head Coach Hugh Riley and Assistant Coach Jason Harris worked hard to make her ready for the next level and many noticed her on the basketball court as she outran everyone up and down each stretch. Shantelle had a great summer on the AAU circuit and also representing Canada at the FIBA 3×3 tournament and caught the attention of many coaches on the D1 level. After a very busy recruiting season, Shantelle narrowed down her choices to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she is thinking of majoring in Sociology with a minor in Criminology or Sports Law.
When we asked Shantelle why she chose Marquette, this is what she had to say “During the recruiting process when making my decision I knew that I wanted to go to a school that was good both academically and basketball wise. So when I went on my official visit in August I felt that Marquette was the perfect fit. I had a great time with the team and I felt extremely comfortable and welcomed by the staff and the girls. Everything just felt right…it’s like I was at home”. Shantelle hopes to make an impact right away”At the end of the 2013-2014 season Marquette will be losing one of their leading scorer and rebounder and I hope to be able to step right in and contribute to the team in both of these areas.”
Head Coach Hugh Riley had this to say “Shantelle is very athletic and has a great upside to her game and she is willing to work hard. Shantelle has been one of the most coachable players. She will do whatever the coaches ask her to do on the court. She has learned and improved so much over the last 2 yrs and that was why she earned so many scholarship offers.” Assistant Coach Jason Harris said ” She has great work ethic – a really hard worker. Her personality and happy-go-lucky ways will take her a long way in life. She is always happy and this translates into her attitude and game on the court. I am really proud of her.” Shantelle had a list of thanks – “First I would like to thank God for His blessings towards me. Then I would like to thank everyone who at some point have given me support during this journey….however special thanks to the following people:-
Coach Hugh Riley and Coach Jason Harris (Rep:-Brampton Warriors Juel) all the coaches at “A Game Basketball” (AAU), Agnes Borg (Canada Basketball) all my High School coaches (St Roch CSS). Last but not the least my parents Philip and Donna for all their support, without them standing by me this would not be possible.”
Shantelle’s goals for her last season of high school, is to be more of a leader on the court and to work hard on her outside game.
